Dont Upgrade

Dont Upgrade The newest, latest, greatest version of Product X is available today. It’s only X dollars and it does all the cool things you wish it could do. Act now and Product X will change your life. We know we don’t need Product X to live a good life (even though we really, really want it). We know we don’t have to buy the new iPhone when our old phone works just fine. We know we don’t need a new car just because the old one isn’t as shiny, just as we know we don’t need the latest version of software, iPad, television, laptop, or gadget to make us happy. Advertisers spend millions to create a sense of urgency to make us drool over their products, but we can refuse to play that game. We can turn down the noise. We can focus on what we have instead of what we don’t have. We already have everything we need. Sure, sometimes things break or wear outâ€"and when that happens, we are left with at least three options: Go without. This option is almost taboo in our culture. It seems radical to many people: Why would I go without when I could just buy a new one? Often this option is the best option, though: when we go without, it forces us to question our stuffâ€"it forces us to discover whether or not we need itâ€"and sometimes we discover life without it is actually better than before. Repair it. Sometimes we can’t necessarily go without. But, instead of running out and procuring Product X, we can attempt to repair the item first. You wouldn’t buy a new car just because the brakes needed to be replaced, would you? The same goes for many other household items. Replace it. As a last resort, we can replace things. But even when we do, we can do so mindfully: we can purchase used items, we can buy products from local businesses, or we can downgrade and still have what’s necessary to live a fulfilling life. Corporations with Lots of Cash and Doing Little Spending Essay

Essays on Corporations with Lots of Cash and Doing Little Spending Essay The paper "Corporations with Lots of Cash and Doing Little Spending" is a great example of an essay on finance and accounting. The article Corporations Hoard Cash as a Precautionary Measure, by David McLean not merely highlights the trend towards cash hoarding by contemporary corporations, which is much supported by the available empirical evidence, but also nudges the informed readers to analyze the valid reasons for the susceptibility of the corporations in the current times to hoard cash. Realistically speaking, varied plausible explanations can be put forward to account for this trend.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One explanation furnished by McLean in the article under consideration is that most of the corporations hoarding cash are pressed by volatile cash flow and that much of the cash being hoarded by them is being accrued through public stock issuance. Further, a significant proportion of this cash is being diverted by the companies in the RD endeavors. In a way this trend towards cash hoarding and pushed up RD effort on the part of modern corporations is quite explainable in terms of the Modern School of Economics. The Neo-Classical School held technology to be a constant factor. However, as per the Modern School, technology is the vital input that helps halt the diminishing marginal returns in these times marred by the rampant recession. Thus, realistically speaking, relevant RD driven technological inputs are the one essential potent tool at the disposal of the companies to meet the fast altering consumer preferences and to keep the average marginal costs under constraints, so as to make their products affordable to the consumers depressed by recession and gravitating towards an augmenting sentiment for saving. Taking into account the ongoing recession and the inflicted consumer sentiment, firms could hardly depend on market dependent cash flows to fund these RD efforts. Moreover, since times immemorial, capital markets have alway s been the pivotal source for capital accumulation by corporations.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There is no denying the fact that this trend towards cash hoarding by corporations does not portend well of the job markets in the United States of America. As the given article explains that the corporations are not pumping the cash accumulated by them into enhancing productivity. Rather they are investing it to boost their RD effort and that too in a futuristic context. So, this hoarded cash could not be positively expected to push productivity and to create more jobs in the labor markets in the times to come. This is indeed indicative of a pessimistic sentiment rampant amongst the corporations. To put it simply, this approach could be expected to reinforce the depleting consumer and investor sentiment, at least in the short run.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In conclusion, the hoarding of cash on the part of corporations and dedicating it predominantly tow ards RD expenditure only certainly does not portend well for the economy. Appropriate steps ought to be taken by the government and the concerned institutions to ameliorate this pessimistic sentiment amongst the corporations and firms.

Microsoft Antitrust Essays - Software, Computing, Business

Microsoft Antitrust Is Microsoft a fetching business model to be emulated or the most destructive force in the software industry? Should the government apply the antitrust laws to the software industry or sit back and wait for dynamic market forces to solve anti-competitive problems? Discussions about Microsoft represent a larger-than-life dispute that speaks not only to the computer giant's impressive efforts to monopolize key elements of the software and electronic commerce markets, but to the larger issues of a high-tech society. Many partisans in debates over Microsoft are speaking to the broader issues and defending ideological views that will be tested as the debate over Microsoft's anti-competitive practices plays out. From my view point, there are some aspects of the dispute that seem clear and others that are anything but clear. First, it is clear that Microsoft has achieved its current market dominance through a combination of factors that include hard work, good luck, popular products, and an impressive array of anti-competitive or simply ruthless business tactics. It is equally apparent that some sectors of the computer industry undoubtedly benefit from this dominance -- not everyone sells products or services that directly compete against Microsoft in strategic markets, and the existence of a private monopoly for the desktop operating system (OS) simplifies life for some developers. And in the increasingly broad areas where Microsoft has targeted a sector for dominance, the results have been a demoralized software industry, a paucity of venture capital and stifled innovation. What is less than clear is what the government or the public should or can do about Microsoft's often brutal efforts to monopolize software markets. The Justice Department is now focusing on important but relatively narrow issues concerning Microsoft's 1995 antitrust consent agreement, whereby Microsoft agreed not to license Windows 95 on a per-machine basis (forcing computer manufactures to pay twice if they installed competitors' OS) and not to tie the purchase of the OS to the purchase of other Microsoft products. Justice is focusing on contractual agreements between Microsoft and computer manufacturers that require firms that distribute Windows 95 also to distribute Internet Explorer, a product Microsoft wants to replace Netscape as the most-used Internet browser. Microsoft's principle defense against the suit is to argue that Internet Explorer 4.0, a program that takes as much as 66 megabytes on a hard disk, is not an application at all but simply a part of the OS. Because more than 90% of PCs worldwide ship with Microsoft's OS, the issue of what constitutes the OS is an important dispute, given the Microsoft agreement regarding product tie-ins.
